“A legal resident of the State of Louisiana — Janice Ellis Smith — entered the neighboring State of Texas illegally. She is considered volatile. She is an underage youth and will lack any self-restraint in executing her dangerous ideologies. If seen, she should be approached with extreme caution. One whole Allowance-Level upgrade will be rewarded to anyone who aids the national Secret Service in bringing this terrorist to justice…”
Nicole dropped her homework to the bedroom floor at the sound of Janice’s name. Her pretty green eyes stared in disbelief at the visual gleaming on her wall.
“Oh, Janice,” she said, tears misting her gaze. “What in the universe were you thinking?”
The broadcast had returned to its regular programming, and Trent dashed down the hallway with the force of a hurricane. He burst into Nicole’s open doorway, startling her.
“Did you see—?”
Sadly, Nicole nodded. Trent threw his head back and laughed, and Nicole pouted angrily at him.
“This is serious, Trent!”
“Of course it is!”
His sister jumped to her feet and nearly screamed at him with indignation.
“I’m not the Border-Crossing terrorist!”
This reduced Nicole to a festering silence, and Trent’s gaze gleamed.
“Why would Janice break Homestate Restrictions and sneak across the Border?”
“How should I know?”
He looked at her for a moment, his voice tinged with ridicule.
“Why do you even like her?”
Troubled, Nicole could only shrug.
“I don’t know. She’s different.”
“Exactly. And that’s what makes her dangerous.”
