I was a hard parent, partly because I had three close together. Some parents are quite happy for there to be a great din around them, but we both wanted it to be peaceful, so I’m afraid there were more stiff reprimands than my son and his wife ever give. And they are very tolerant, like seeing a child wanting to splash in a puddle. They’ve encouraged them to be very free, whereas I would say ‘Don’t go in that puddle!’, because I was conscious of the amount of washing that that would engender.
I’ve often thought that if I were to do it all again, I wouldn’t be so strict. You always wish you could have your time again – I would let them splash in puddles.
