They proudly showed off their costumes to all the neighbors, garnering equal amounts of praise and sweet treats. Each step the boys took closer to the mall brought about equal measures of anticipation and fear. Neither boy would admit how excited they were about the dance, and instead only discussed the costume contest and prizes. Tommy was certain that neither of them cared about the contest anymore, but they would pretend it mattered for a little while longer.
The boys had gotten about halfway down Yankee Road, when power fluctuated. The lights throughout the town briefly dimmed and flickered erratically. Since this wasn't exactly an unusual occurrence, most of the trick-or-treaters paid little attention. Brian and Tommy only briefly glanced at one another and shrugged.
After a half an hour of walking, Tommy huffed and puffed. "Man, I am roasting in this outfit," he complained.
"These ten pounds of chain mail aren't doing me any favors either." Brian sighed heavily.
"It's totally worth it, though," Tommy observed.
Brian nodded at the werewolf. "Totally."
The streets of Plainville were aflutter with youthful ghosts, zombies, glow-in-the-dark skeletons and pirates. Every manner of uniform, robot, creature and profession were proudly worn by the groups of children haunting the streets. Practically every home had at least one lit jack-o-lantern, an illuminated string of Halloween themed lights, and at least one prop sitting in the front yard or porch. Howls and screams of laughter abounded, as dozens of flashlight beams cut through the still air.
Tommy stopped in front of a large group of children and menaced Brian with a mighty growl and swipe of his paws. Brian pulled out his father's saber, and the two staged an epic mock battle in front of the younger children who applauded, gasped and cheered at their antics. It dawned on Brian that some of the neighbors might start asking about the sword, so he quickly put it away and quipped that it was plastic. They pushed at one another and giggled as they progressively filled their bags with candy.
