“Trust me, Gerty, those two are capital H hot for each other.”
“Hot for each other? Good grief, Edwina, what kind of talk is that? Hot for each other.” Silence. “You really think so?”
The dental floss selection in aisle four couldn’t compete with the wholesale gossip drifting over from aisle three. Diverted from her debate between waxed and unwaxed, Candy cocked an ear.
“Know so. You seen the way he looks at her?”
“No,” breathed Gertrude Farmer. “How does he look at her?”
“Like this.”
“Oh.” Gertrude sounded faint. “Oh, my.”
“Gave me a hot flash or two, I can tell you that. And I wasn’t the one on the receiving end.”
“I did hear they’ve been spending quite a bit of time together for the past couple weeks. You know, after school and all.”
Candy’s lips curved sympathetically. Small towns were to teenage lovers what the Star Crossed Magazine was to Miley Cyrus.
“After school ain’t nothin’.” The ensuing dramatic pause undoubtedly gave Edwina a chance to check over her shoulder before adding, “He’s been seen coming out of her house. More than once. Late.”
“How late?”
“Late enough.”
“Oh, Edwina, are you sure?”
“A’course I’m sure,” snapped Edwina. “Wouldn’t report it otherwise. You know I don’t hold with spreading tales, Gert.”
“Ah. Hm.”
“Darla Wilson told me, and she outta know. Lives right next door to the woman, doesn’t she?”
Candy’s grin collapsed. Darla Wilson was her neighbor.
“Yes, yes she does.”
“Looks like the girl took my advice after all.”
“What advice would that be, Ed?”
Candy felt her face go up in flames. She squeezed her eyes shut as her lips formed a soundless crap.
“I told her she should ....” Edwina’s voice dropped to an unintelligible murmur.
“Oh, my lord!” Gerty giggled like a schoolgirl. “Flat on his .... Edwina Ruth Bimson! You are shameless! Absolutely shameless!”
“Hah! Worked, didn’t it?”
Gerty gasped. “You mean to say ... you think she’s ...”
“Besotted. Girl’s gone and got herself besotted, for sure. Kind of had my eye on her for Arvin, but ....” Edwina’s sentence trailed off as the two women moved down the aisle.
