Josephine looked sadly at her daughter before replying, “Morgaine, before you told me about the past, about who you are I had believed that we held our own destinies in our hand. Now listening to you I have to truly wonder how free we are,” Josephine inquired.
Morgaine let out a low chuckle before responding, “Most people are as free as the day they’re born. The only ones who aren’t free, are those of us that are known as the Children of Fate. Sometimes you can’t help a situation you are born into,” Morgaine solemnly stated.
Josephine arched an eyebrow and asked, “How are these Children of Fate chosen?”
Morgaine could see how this would worry Josephine. After thinking on the answer a moment Morgaine replied, “A child is not chosen for such an august role at birth. Usually the choices a person makes and how they go about living their lives determines if the Gods will consider them Children of Fate,” Morgaine explained as clearly as she could.
“How were you chosen,” Josephine asked.
Morgaine thought hard on this answer, for the way she answered would possibly change Josephine’s thoughts on her. Morgaine took a breath and answered, “I’m not sure how I was chosen as a Child of Fate. I believe the choice was made when I consciously chose to oppose Merlin and his interference with both my life and that of my people.”
After thinking for a moment longer Josephine replied, “I would have thought the choice was made when you chose to study magic.”
Morgaine looked puzzled at that for a moment until she realized that to most modern people magic was thought of witchcraft as a taboo subject. Morgaine let out a chuckle before replying, “All those years ago magic was another way of life. There was nothing dark or taboo about it. It was expected that I learn magic, after all my mother is the goddess known as Le Fay, the arts are her chosen gift to mortal kind. I was born into a magical heritage, why should I not have explored that which was mine by right of birth," Morgaine asked somewhat rhetorically.
