“My dad sent me this,” he started. Brian’s dad mailed him pieces intended to inspire Christian zeal or elevate one’s self-esteem. Often it was a Bible verse with a note about perseverance and keeping one’s nose to the grindstone. “There was this survey on the most and least sexy names,” my boyfriend said. “And Brian was on the list of the most desirable,” he said, puffing out his chest. He pointed to “Brian,” amidst “Paul,” and “Clint,” and “Justin.”
I reached for the scrap of paper and he yanked it away.
“Elizabeth was on the least sexy list,” he said, his voice hushed to prevent others hearing.
“Let me see that,” I said, suddenly mad at my parents for their bad taste.
“No way,” he said. “You’re not stable enough to read this. I don’t want you getting your panties in a wad”.
