The rats were bigger and meaner closer to the water. They said unkind things to Chisolm.
“Look at the fatty hanging out with a houseplant,” said one huge wharf rat almost as big as Scout himself.
Scout’s eyes grew big. He did not say anything back.
The possum said bravely, “He’s not a houseplant. He’s a housedog. There’s a difference, you know. Palmetto bug?” Chisolm offered a handful to the rats.
