Byron stationed himself in the little wheelhouse and away they went, motoring slowly around the battery.
“It’s so marvelous to see it from this side for a change,” said Nicola.
“Yeah, Byron, let’s take the boat out to Fort Sumter.”
“That’s a great idea, Rory.”
They waved at the tourists on the battery and at the tourists on the harbor tour boats. The tourists waved back and took photos of Byron’s pretty yacht.
Nicola asked Rory and Byron questions about Charleston history and Fort Sumter.
“Lauren, have you ever been to Fort Sumter?” asked Nicola.
“Yes. The entire surface is painted black and it’s really hot.”
Rory laughed. “Kind of like a freshly blackened parking lot in July.”
“Right,” said Maggie. “That would send any vampire melting into the pavement in a heartbeat.”
