We are all in leadership positions to someone. As one wise person said, “Someone is always watching you and therefore you are a role model to that person.” A limited paradigm might keep us from thinking we are leaders that we are only followers. Therefore, the second edition includes material on being a ‘courageous follower’ (a term popularized by Ira Chaleff in his eponymous book), in essence a servant leader to those above us. Consequently, the second edition contains material on overcoming toxic leadership i.e. when the person above us is difficult to serve and demonstrably is not a servant leader him- or herself. Followership in its purest form is servant leadership.
I believe these topics work well together and the original material, with the primary focus of serving subordinates, can also work when serving your superiors.
