Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah by William Williams
When I tread the verge of Jordan, Bid my anxious fears subside;
Death of death and hell’s Destruction, Land me safe on Canaan’s side.
The older I get, the more I realize I need God’s guidance. Often when I am starting to feel overwhelmed by a situation I’m dealing with, I hum the melody to this hymn while pondering the lyrics. I remember one particular time when my relationship with my teenaged son was going through a very troubling period. During that time, I found myself humming this tune to keep me from saying or doing something rash.
The excerpt above captures the essence of what this hymn means to me. Sometimes I feel I am close to the edge of falling in the Jordan River and being swept away by circumstances beyond my control. At times I have to remind myself that the bad thing I’m anxious about hasn’t happened yet. That is why the phrase, “bid my anxious fears subside” resonate so well with me.
I hope this song has uplifted others like it has uplifted me. No matter how strong or tough we may think we are, we all will need to look beyond ourselves and plead, “Guide me, o thou great Jehovah”!
