In a certain domain, but not in our domain;
lived-was tsar. This tsar had a daughter; she was
very beautiful; many men proposed to her; only she
didn’t like any of them. One old woman had a son.
She sent him to propose to the tsar’s daughter. He
went. Tsar accepted; only ordered to build a crystal
palace in one night. The son went and told of
everything to his mother. And he added:
- Tsar said that if I don’t build a palace, he
will cut off my head!
- Oh, my dear son, do not cry! Morning is
wiser than evening.
Mother gave him a ring and said:
- Here, say to this ring, that you want 25
masters to jump out of it and order them to do
anything that you wish.
Her son did just that. They jumped out;
after a certain amount of time, the crystal palace
was ready. As their job was completed, they went
back into the ring. The man became very joyous
and went back to tsar and said:
- I completed all that was ordered.
To what tsar responded:
- You did that very good, but for the second
night, make me a crystal temple. Also make a paved
road of white stone from this temple to the palace.
The man became very sad; came to his
mother. Mother told him:
- Do not be sad. Morning is wiser than
evening. Here, he woke up in the morning and said:
- Come out 25 masters out of my ring, make
me a crystal temple, also make a paved road of
white stone from that temple to the palace.
After some time, all was ready. Again, he
went to the tsar:
- Here, your majesty tsar, all is ready.
- All this is done very well. Only now, make
a river that would flow between this temple and
the palace; that there would be a bridge across
that river; and that bridge would be wrapped in
velvet; and different trees and flowers would grow
on the shores of that river; and different heavenly
birds would sing upon those trees; and that there
would be rabbits running around on the shores of
that river; and in that river would be many
different kinds of fish; and that fishermen would
catch that fish and sing songs … only then will I let
my daughter marry you!
The man was very upset, and he went home
to his mother, and he told her of everything that
tsar said in detail. Then his mother said:
- Well, do not cry; morning is wiser than
evening. Just do the same thing with the ring as
you did before.
The man woke up in the morning, said the
same thing to the ring, 25 masters appeared from
the ring and did everything that was asked. So the
man again went to the tsar. Tsar was very joyous
that everything was done as asked. So he said:
- Now go and prepare for the wedding. And
come back in such and such hour.
The man was very joyous and went home to
his mother. He told her of everything that
happened and that tsar ordered him to get ready
for the wedding. His mother said to him:
- Then get ready and go there.
As he was a simple man, he put on his gray
linen shirt and went to the tsar. Tsar sat him down
next to his daughter and gave them his blessing.
And then they went to the temple to be married;
only she didn’t like the groom, that she’s tsar’s
daughter, and he’s a simple man. But there was
nothing she could do; they were married, returned
home and celebrated for three days.
As the guests left on the forth day, tsar’s
daughter began to ask of her husband: how he
could do all, that her father asked of him? So, he
told her everything in detail, for he loved her. But
as they went to sleep at night, she removed his ring
and said:
- Come out 25 masters, dig a deep hole,
throw my husband into that hole and place a stone
pillar above that hole!
So the man was thrown into that hole. Only
loving cat and dog remained after that man. When
they realized that their master was gone, they
began to search for him. They found him under a
pillar, thanks to their keen sense of smell. So the
dog and the cat dug out a hole and climbed to him.
He was there alive, so he told them:
- If you love me, than go to my wife and
take away my ring from her.
As the cat and the dog entered the room,
they saw his wife admiring the ring. Suddenly, the
cat ripped out the ring from her hands and ran
away with it, and the dog followed the cat. They
ran up to the river, and they had to cross it. The
cat didn’t know how to swim, so the cat said to the
dog:
- Take me across upon your back.
The dog agreed, but only asked for the ring,
so she could deliver the ring to the master. The cat
sat down upon the dog and they began to cross the
river. Suddenly, the dog dropped the ring in the
water. They crossed the river and began to pity
their master, for they could not deliver the ring.
The cat here decided to ask to help a fisherman
clean the fish. As she began to clean a pike, she
saw a ring in it, took it out, and they, together with
the dog, ran to their master. As the cat climbed
down to him, he took the ring and said:
- Come out of the ring, the 25 masters;
break this pillar and take me out of here; go kill my
wife and take me back to my mother.
All was done as he ordered. And the man
began to live again with his mother.
