“Yo.” I answered the phone as I was trying to situate myself in my fluffy blankets on my bed. Yeah, this was the life. What more could a girl ask for? There was nothing better than popcorn, movies with hot guys, and my bed.
Then came a heavy sigh at the other end of the line, which my boss, Phil, only did when he was becoming annoyed. “Must you answer the phone like that? What if I was the President?”
“Boss, if the President is calling me, then it’s an international emergency, like aliens took over the world, and we Marshals are the last ones standing.” Another audible sigh. “Plus, if that happened, I wouldn’t have a working cell phone.”
“Okay, shut up. Just don’t talk anymore.”
“Seriously, I’ll suspend your ass if I have to.” He growled.
Huffing out my surrender, I wait like an obedient employee. Sometimes he had a sense of humor, other times, not so much. It was hard to judge his good days from bad. Almost like a dog with rabies; so you can imagine how many good days there actually were.
“They found Martinez.”
“Woot woot!” I cried, pumping my fist in the air. “About freaking time. I have been after that asshole for months!”
Phil let out another sigh. “Well, let’s not celebrate yet. He was found dead at his house. It’s pretty nasty.”
“Damn. Well, that sucks. I guess the local PD is going to want to take over, huh?”
“Yeah, they will, but they want help on it. And guess who gets to go?”
“Not me, I’m on vacation, remember?” To confirm this more to myself than anyone else, I grab my bowl of popcorn and set it next to me, then start eating. My plan was to watch most of the movies I have missed over the past two years. Making my point with him, I shove popcorn in my mouth, crunching loudly.
“What are you eating?”
“Popcorn. My vacation food. Yum.”
“Not anymore. Get your ass to Martinez’s house, ASAP.”
“Isn’t there a line in the Police Chief Rule Book about this? ‘Thou shall not pull employee from days of rest’.”
Phil chuckled once, then hung up on me.
