Leaders talk too much, ask lousy questions, and settle for inadequate answers. The communication competency gap for leaders has more to do with the asking side of communication than the telling side. Sustainable leadership follows the 25 - 25 -50 Rule. Talk 25% of the time and have something to say that followers need to hear. Ask 25% of the time by formulating thought provoking questions that push team members to identify useful insights on the way to great answers. Listen 50% of the time. Suspend judgment as you listen for understanding rather than for agreement.
