Leaders are called to create a culture and working climate that engages rather than disengages team members. Leading is not merely one of many functions. It is an all-consuming role in which the leader does everything possible to positively influence team members toward strategic outcomes. Leaders take the initiative to close the gap between culture and climate. When the problem is organizational, they fix it. When the problem is a team member’s personal baggage, they find a way to help. At last resort, leaders will carefully calculate if it is necessary to release and replace the disengaged. How this transition is handled impacts the attitude and engagement of every other team member who is watching.
