The Setting: A member of the royal staff in David’s kingdom is meeting with a scribe. The royal staff member is trying to explain why the king wants the scribe to begin writing down the vast collections of narratives, poems, histories and other oral works. The scribe, although pleased with the promise of steady work, remains somewhat skeptical.

“So, let me get this straight”, a skeptical Barukh asked. “You want me to bring on some more scribes and start writing down what has been transmitted orally for hundreds of years. Am I catching the essence of what you’re asking?” Even as he said those words, Barukh still couldn’t believe he was having this conversation. Kaylev, a member of King David’s royal staff, couldn’t help but chuckle at his friend’s cynicism. “C’mon Barukh, do you want to spend the rest of your life writing down royal decrees and tax receipts? Trust me; what I am proposing will be a lot more interesting for you.”
