"Are you eating all the bacon?" Cassidy asked with a smile.
"No," Isobelle mumbled around a mouthful of bacon.
"Guess I'll have to just cook some more," Bethany said.
She was looking better. At least she had clothes on and not that damn robe. It was progress. She'd also combed her hair, but more importantly she believed Cassidy was serious about leaving. Cassidy looked over at Isobelle to tease her some more but she had a blank, faraway look on her face.
"Isobelle, honey, what's wrong?" Cassidy asked.
She didn't respond. It was like she couldn't hear him.
"Isobelle?" Bethany tried. "Cas, what's wrong with her? Should we take her to the hospital?"
"Pawpaw's dead," Isobelle suddenly said.
"What are you talking about, sweetie? Pawpaw is fine. We're going to see him in a little bit," Cassidy said.
"No we won't. He's dead."
Cassidy watched Isobelle’s eyes carefully, confused. In an instant, Isobelle went back to stuffing bacon in her mouth. What the hell was that about? He was about to ask her when the phone rang.
"I'll get it," Cassidy said. "Hello. Mom? What's wrong. Slow down. Why are you crying? Let me talk to Dad. Gone? What do you mean Dad's gone?"
