Perhaps the greatest thing we can do for our creative lives is to love the world. Love it like you loved your first love, like you love your children. Love it passionately and fiercely in all its beauty, its goofiness, its occasional ugliness and incomprehensibility. When you love someone, you love them selflessly, you love them in spite of it all. And you pay attention.
Sometimes this is difficult; we take so much for granted. When we find ourselves doing that, we need to shake ourselves a little. We must “snap to,” recognize that we have been missing a lot in this wonderful world, and deliberately decide to do something about it.
