Get up.” At Fonso’s voice I felt the horse’s strength beneath me. I tried to rise on one knee. Slid off my mount and was lifted weightlessly into the air by the safety harness. Felt like I was a baby bird trying to fly on toothpick wings. No grace at all. Fonso put me back on the horse and we began again.
After several false starts, I was able to rise to my knees. Was elated I had mastered the trick, but my knees was black and blue and my back aching by the time Fonso called out, “time to quit.” He helped me out of the harness and led me to a second ring where I watched Jaelle put another horse through his paces.
