Because her awful secret cannot be identified, it can grow to be totally unmanageable. As horrible as the truth is, her imaginings are more horrible. The secret pushes against her consciousness just as it pushed at her lips as a child, threatening to burst free. Now, without knowing what the secret is, she is afraid it will slip out
