No matter what flavor of apocalypse hits the Earth, the ability to find, construct, improvise, and utilize weaponry will be a key to your survival. This is true even if the apocalypse, itself, is something immune to weapons, such as, for instance, a meteor strike that savages the eco-system – you’ll still need a basic grasp of weaponry to deal with the inevitable Post-Apocalyptic Horror that follows. You’ll almost certainly be at a disadvantage when the paranoid survivalists come for your canned goods (assuming you’re not a paranoid survivalist) – and your only hope will be to surprise them with your own weapons and well-developed skill at arms.
While skill with bladed or improvised weapons will be beneficial, skill with firearms will be essential. Even if the apocalypse involves aliens with advanced armor and weaponry, a basic understanding of firearms will be key: once you surprise one of the aliens from behind, bash his head to paste with a rock, and steal his alien pulse-wave rifle, the principle of aim and pull trigger will be much the same.
