Brody and Max sprinted toward Emma. Her shrieks filled the air. Brody hurdled over small bushes in his path beating Max to Emma. When Brody arrived at the scene, Emma hugged the back of his colonial coat. Aspen was nosing into a neighboring bush.
“What’s wrong?” asked Max breathless when she caught up to them.
“What?” said Max.
Brody’s laugh grew deeper. He tried to talk, pointing to the nearby shrubs. “Hedge,” he gasped, “hog.” He erupted in more laughter with tears rolling down his cheeks. Emma still clung to his coat. Aspen squealed and drew back from the bush as a rolled hedgehog moved along the edge of the shrubbery. Max let out a giggle then Emma joined in when she realized that the little hedgehog was scared of them and trying to roll away. She released Brody from her grip and her cheeks grew crimson.
