She pats the mattress beside her. “It’s very comfy. I’m glad you’re going to join me.” She could get used to him lying beside her, over her, beneath her. One night, that’s all you get, she reminds herself. Tomorrow you will have to let him go.

“What’s that?” she murmurs.
“I want to be with you, Roxy. I don’t want you thinking about the consequences of being with me. I don’t want you thinking up a way to get rid of me in the morning.” She needs to add mind reader to his talents. “Control is an illusion. The only thing you can control is the moment you’re in right now. How do you want this moment to go? Do you want to put your pajamas on and climb into bed, or do you want to explore this thing we have together?” His eyes slowly undress her body. “I’m not afraid of your father. Tell me what you want.”
