Tasha was still sleep when I rolled out of the bed. I hopped in the shower, got dressed and went into the living room to turn on the T.V. I had no idea what went down the night before with Jay but I figured it would be on the news at some point that day. I flipped through the channels for a second and then remembered that the Miami Heat and the Phoenix Suns played the night before. I turned it to Sportscenter just in time to see the score. I waited to catch the Top 10 plays and then I turned it back to channel 5. As soon as I got to the channel the headline story was showing.
“Thanks Barbara. I am standing here in the Old Cathedral District of Saginaw. An area that’s known for its classic appeal and distance from the more dangerous areas of the city. The continuing streak of quiet nights in this area was broken last night. Sometime around midnight last night, residents were awakened by the sounds of gunfire coming from inside this house. “I had just turned out the lights and got in bed when I heard the loudest sound I’ve ever heard here. It sounded like somebody shot a cannon or something. I lost count because there were so many of them. I knew I had to call the police.” This is what resident Patricia Rollins had to say after hearing the shots go off in the home next door to hers. Other neighbors recalled hearing what sounded like a war zone, ending with the sound of shotguns. By the time police arrived at the scene, five men lay dead and a neighborhood was stunned. This is Dan Riktor, T.V. 5 news. Thanks Dan, police believe that drugs were the motive behind these murders and have no suspects. If you have any leads in this story, please contact the Saginaw Police. In other news...”
I sat there stunned the entire time the story was on and then for a while after turning it off. God damn cuz, I thought to myself. I jumped up and ran to the room to grab my phone. Tasha still wasn’t out of the bed yet, so I kissed her on the cheek and headed out the door.
