As if from a vast height I looked down upon a featureless landscape. I drifted closer to the ground. I saw two figures facing each other from a great distance.”
“I recognized one as Mvhvlv even though his form and features were blurred by an enshrouding halo of light. The other man was cloaked in writhing, wriggling shadows. A pitiless malevolence radiated from the shadowy form. The shadowed man stretched his palms out towards Mvhvlv. Darkness streaked with red flashes poured forth from the man’s hands. Mvhvlv extended his hands in response. A thin ray of light lanced out and widened into a cone of pure white. The red streaked darkness and cone of white crashed into each other, surging back and forth, neither able to overwhelm the other.”
“The writhing shadows of Mvhvlv’s opponent roiled like boiling water, swelled and burst. A monstrous horned serpent coalesced around the shadowed man until he was swallowed up within it. The serpent darted its head like a striking snake towards Mvhvlv. The red streaked darkness drove the cone of light back. The darkness rushed around Mvhvlv like waters around a boulder in a stream. Encased in a barrier of light, Mvhvlv was engulfed by the darkness like an island by the seas. The darkness snapped and clawed at the light like an enraged panther.”
“Light shimmered and sparkled around Mvhvlv’s hands. The white hide bundle I had seen placed near the fire at the dance materialized in Mvhvlv’s palms. He lifted the bundle skyward. A soft purplish glow emanated from it.”
“HREE! HREE!” an eagle scream pierced the sky. The serpent looked up, hissing. A giant form like an eagle of light filled the sky. He hovered upright in the air and flapped his mighty wings. A wind of light swept the darkness back towards the rearing serpent. As it blew back, the darkness contracted into a lump and slammed into the serpent. The serpent collapsed into the shadowed man who stumbled backwards to his knees from the impact.”
“Arrghed,” the shadowed man roared. A stench of rotten eggs filled the air as if belched from his lungs. “How long do you think you can hold out old man? Even if you outlive me another shall rise in my place. Who will stand in your place when you go the way of all flesh? The time of the Adjik Hata wanes, its strength is nearly spent. If not me then my son shall be there to spit upon its rotting corpse.” His head snapped, “Ohh, and who is that?”
“Somehow I knew he was aware of my presence. My spirit trembled. Never had I felt such fear not even when I had kneeled as a captive contemplating the terrors of the stake. BACK YOU FOOL! a voice thundered in my mind. The voice hurled me like a spear. The landing jarred as if from a fall which knocks the wind from your chest. I found myself upon my pallet in the comforting confines of my cabin.
