The pneumatic lock engages behind her for the last time. The creak of the closing cell fills the morning air. She walks slowly past her friends, dressed in oversized jeans, and a shirt falling from one shoulder looking like it’s trying to escape. With each step, her broken heart leaves crumbs of sorrow. Looking over her shoulder, she hopes she doesn’t lose the connection she has with them. Tears of pain, love, and hope fill the eyes of the four women. Mickey blows a kiss to the remaining quartet and leaves Cell Block C behind.
These women became her friends, and for that kindness she will never forget them. The relationships she forged allowed her to pull through the experience. Survival is a team sport in prison.
