Chapter 1 - A Gamble With the Winds of Change -- Living and Learning From the Healing Waters of Courage
Sometimes We Must Take Risks to Change and Grow.
In life there are times events happen that do not make sense. There are moments when it seems we barely can find the strength to face a brand new day. There are some days life seems certain and all the signs point to good beginnings. Then there are nights when the fears of change consume us so much that it feels like we are drowning under the inability to take a chance in order to move forward. Life is all about taking risks because without the risks we take, we may never know that which we were meant to learn in the first place.
The following poem, “A Gamble with the Winds of Change”, is about one person’s search for greater meaning in his or her life. This poem is the struggle of someone so eager to change his life and feeling as if he or she has no place to turn until God sends a special friend in the form of an eagle who helps him find the courage to face his fears and embrace all the winds of change that come his way. When you feel all alone and as if nobody truly cares, this poem is one about taking a chance and knowing that no matter which way the wind blows, there will come a true friend who will love you and be right by your side no matter what.
A Gamble with the Winds of Change
I was sailing on a boat on
The big ocean we call life
When a wind so strong struck my sails
Filling my spirit with so much strife.
I held onto the sailboat
During a storm of uncertain times
In the midst of the cloudy skies I asked God
Why do I have to suffer so much and always ask why?
The answers did not come and after so much
Time had passed I made it back to shore.
I was greeted by a gentle breeze telling me to
Keep the faith so I will be blessed with so much more.
Filled with hope and wondering
What in the world I should expect
The winds of change blew me right into a
Valley that immediately scared me to death.
I was paralyzed by fear and begged God to send me
Some wind to lift me right out of despair
Yet I was trapped by the howling winds of sadness
From all the moments when it seemed nobody cared.
I reached for God to free me from this valley
Where life was way too hard
Then he sent a cool wind to pick me up and blow me
Right to a mountain that touched my broken heart.
I closed my eyes and could feel a gentle, warm breeze
Caress my much weary soul
As the calming wind lifted my spirits
I searched within for the spiritual strength to help me grow.
Feeling that maybe I could take some kind of gamble
To get my life going in the right direction
This time I hoped some wind could blow me
Far away from the grip of constant rejection.
I made a bet with nature and asked a golden eagle
If I could take a trip on his wings.
He picked me up and flew right against the unpredictable,
Shifting winds with such strength and ease.
I was now flying so high with a true friend
To keep me from falling from grace.
When the winds of time became challenging
He protected me always and kept me safe.
There were still storms that came but
I was determined not to let anything make me fall.
The eagle was my kindred spirit helping me endure tough winds
So nothing could break me down at all.
During days when the sun was shining
And there was hardly a breeze in sight
I could feel a cool air coming from the eagle’s wings
Reassuring me everything would be all right.
Through all the changing seasons and the
Winds of time that brought surprises my way
I just kept flying high with the eagle who was
There to help me endure my not so good days.
When the winds of change did not always offer
The certain path I wanted to pursue
I knew God had sent me a special kind of
Loving friend who remained forever true.
I have taken gambles all my life with the
Winds of change not knowing which way to turn.
As I look back on my past choices I realized during
The strongest winds there was so much to learn.
Every now and then when I take a gamble on
The winds of change hoping for the best
I know I have a true love in the eagle who calms
All the wind to help me survive life’s greatest tests.
