I hung up the phone, laying it gently in its cradle rather than slamming it down in fury and frustration like I really wanted to do. Another body had been discovered, this time down at Lake Pleasant, near Phoenix.
Unconfirmed information had the authorities down there thinking that this death was linked to five others they knew of, so far.
The first had been discovered near Navajo Lake in New Mexico. Though definitely confirmed as a murder, it had originally been thought to be an isolated incident.
Until they'd found the second at the Gunnison Reservoir in Utah. The bodies of Lorraine Wilson and Carla Mayhew had both been discovered shortly after their deaths, making it possible to determine that they had been starved and tortured prior to the final killing blow.
It wasn't until the third body was found that my department was approached by the FBI. The badly decomposed remains of Laura Pinkton had been found buried at Willow Lake Park nearly three months earlier. But she had lain in her grave for six months before that. Willow Lake was my territory.
