Brantleigh Doyle is stuck in a routine. Wake up, fight demons, eat, sleep, repeat. In her small refugee camp where she and a ragtag band of rebels attempt to survive, Brantleigh and her best friends Marley and Kylani go through the motions each day, never questioning that this is their fate as the left-behinds.
But when Cooper, with his dark secrets and darker past, stumbles bleeding and battered into their camp, he unwittingly hands Brantleigh the keys to unlocking a future that could be: darkness in balance with light again, demons in check, a chance to survive. Despite her mistrust, Brantleigh puts her faith in Cooper’s knowledge of the ruined cities of men, the weaknesses of the demons, and the knowledge he has about the Dark King, Cimmerian. When Cooper is kidnapped by the Dark King, Brantleigh embarks on a journey through a ruined world, fighting demons, tangling with Seers, and going head-to-head with a man so dark and wicked that he is literally the embodiment of evil. She is faced with a series of choices, each more difficult than the last, and her choices, and the subsequent consequences will drag her and everyone she knows deeper into the final underground battle between good and evil.
In this moment, Brantleigh becomes aware of the sharp differences between the ways that the men in her life love her: Cooper fiercely and Marley with tenderness. Brantleigh has always taken Marley for granted. he's always just been there. But now, in this moment, she realizes that he loves her with such dedication and intensity that he would die for her if necessary. And she realizes, perfect though his love is, she may not return it.

The Delphian Alliance: Onyx
The kiss was not what she expected. When she kissed Cooper, it was like they were trying to consume one another. It was urgent, feverish. Marley kissed her tentatively, as though if he held her too hard she would shatter. It was a kiss that was fraught with sweetness and tenderness and it brought tears to her eyes because she realized in that moment how much Marley loved her. He would march to his death if it meant spending one more minute with her.
