Haley had never actually seen her dad
wrestle before, but knew he must have been
awesome if he was the champ, and for so long.
Almost every Saturday morning they would
wrestle on the living room floor, putting on
events that would put the current Pay-Per-
Views to shame. Often following the same
scripted match, at some point Haley would
eventually gain the upper hand, and go for her
signature move off the top rope (which was the
arm of the couch, of course). It always seemed
she would be mere inches away from getting
that three count, but her dad would always
kick out at the last possible second. Often
Haley would complain to an imaginary referee;
slapping her hands three times as if to tell the
ref to speed up his count.
Then came the day she finally bested her
father. It was a glorious moment in her life,
Haley remembers it fondly.
The match was going as usual; but as Haley
made her way to the top rope, she could see
something different in her father’s eyes. As he
lay their looking up at his inevitable doom,
Haley swears that he actually smiled a bit, as if
welcoming the oncoming defeat.
Haley spread her arms out far and wide,
playing to the crowd. She raised her right arm
and slapped her elbow three times with her left
hand; signaling to the crowd that they were
about to get what they came to see, The Big
Elbow. Haley launched into the air in what
looked like slow motion. Hearing nothing but
the sounds of the soaring eagles around her,
Haley flew gracefully in the air, mid length
dark hair flowing in the wind, and landed her
signature move, crisp and clean.
Flopping around like a fish out of water,
Haley’s dad sold the move perfectly. He even
got up, took three steps, and then Flair-flopped
onto the mat. She crawled back towards his
now lifeless body, the cheers of the crowd
helping her move, inch by agonizing inch.
Seemingly exhausted, Haley reached her
opponent and pulled herself on top of him. She
hooked the left leg and pinned her father.
One…two…three. And the crowd went wild!
Ah, that was a special day indeed.
Both stunned and amazed, she stood there
as her dad, on his knees in defeat, handed his
championship belt to her. It was like a scene
out of an epic movie; with her father bestowing
the belt upon her while the whole kingdom
watched.
He told her that she was now a champion.
In fact, she was now the champion of her entire
world, and that this belt proved it. But, he said
that she could only wear it if she promised to
be, and act, like a true champion. She had to
look after it now; it would be her complete
responsibility. A promise she has never
broken, to this very day.
Her dad had a way of making little things
like a wrestling match victory in the living
room sound so amazing.
