He circled the desert around the encampment for seven days, just one day shy of the planet's standard week. Alone, finally, save for his own thoughts. But still he knew he was watched. He could almost feel the god's eyes boring into his back.
Death fast became the fate of any herder he met, each one bearing Shirain's face. He left their bodies to rot in the sun, their packs strewn next to them after he had emptied each one of whatever nourishment they carried. Only the terrified walfres were allowed to flee before him, seeking the shelter of the rope-fenced pens beside the camp.
What did he care of their lives? They could have let him stay in peace. He could have become one of them. But no. They had given no thought towards his life. Just their god. Their disgusting, murdering, all-important god.
He had tried to reason with those he killed. Had tried to talk to the first group he came across. He was just another Rogue to them now. An outcast to be hunted. They had nearly brought him down.
That's what they did. They made ordinary men into monsters, refused to prevent this change or offer any help and then killed those men, those Rogues, once they were forced to accept what they had become. None of these people deserved the life they had been gifted. They all deserved death. Every last one. And he was…
He prowled closer to the tents during the night. The coloured canvases were gaily lit, the squares and triangles forming a patternless mosaic. Torches floated in the air, their stands blending into the night, to rim the camp with their brilliance.
Something stirred on the slope before him. The dark shape creeping along the sand was far too small to be an adult walfre. Even a newborn calf stood as high as his shoulders and this shape, be it animal or monster, would only reach his waist.
He watched the shape draw near, smiling as the name came to mind. He liked it. Unsullied by Lorric's serpent tongue, it felt more intimate. No more Koral. Koral was dead. Long live Veng.
