“You did what?” Her voice rang across the water and sent a pair of ducks into quacking flight.
“Don’t be mad, Dena,” he said, a boyish grin on his face.
Dena stared at him, hands on her hips. Money meant nothing to Britt. He had told her once that the money came in faster than he could spend it or hide it from Uncle Sam. But to give away his home just one day after leaving it, like whacking off a gangrenous limb! Such a sacrifice was beyond her comprehension. It must have torn a huge chunk out of his heart, and yet he stood looking at her with his heart in his eyes, apparently intact.
“I . . . I don’t know what to say,” she said.
“Say you still love me and you’ll try to make a home with me here,” he said.
“Of course.” Taking his hands in her strong grasp, she lifted them toward her face and shook them for emphasis. “Pay attention, Britt. Just listen to me. This will be our home, I promise you that. But you can’t expect to settle in here and be happy like a normal person.”
There was playful shock on his face and exaggerated offense in his voice as he said, “I can’t?”
“No. You’re not normal. I don’t think you even realize how peculiar you are. And you’re still bouncing from your career hitting the stage just last week.”
He choked back a laugh at the intensity of her lecture.
She continued to shake his hands, trying to get her message through to him. “You’ve spent half your life on a stage or in a jet or at a party. Always in the spotlight. You can’t play Mr. Britt Homebody, and you can’t sit here waiting to scare the boogeymen away. Please, please tell me you’re going to find some venture to occupy yourself.”
“I am deeply offended,” he said with exaggerated primness. “What did I do to merit being called an insane bouncing oddball?”
She rewarded him with a smile. “Whom I admire with all my heart. You get harder to understand and easier to admire each day. I don’t know how to thank you for making such a sacrifice to get a home for us.”
He leaned forward and whispered in her ear, “I’ll think of something.”
