All of Ziyah’s family members are overweight and she’s struggled with her weight from the time she hit puberty. Her ethnic background being East Indian, she was accustomed to eating rice, curries, roti, delectable fried fritters and homemade desserts. When her mother was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, the diet didn’t change, and by the time Ziyah graduated from college, her 5-foot-2 frame was carrying 160 pounds. She’d been a size 12 when she enrolled in college, but at graduation she was a size 16. When she looked through her closet for clothes to wear for her first job, none of her suits fit. She was devastated and decided to go on a popular diet. She managed to lose fifteen pounds in a month, but she had a difficult time sticking to the diet.
