The first day of their trip to Goblin Island was uneventful. Dart and Dillard had made good time and were better than halfway to the island. Dillard said that they were probably no more than six hours from the island. It was nighttime when Dart stopped to rest.
“You can sleep for the next three hours while I swim around and check for any danger,” Dillard told Dart. “Then I’ll sleep for three hours. After you wake me, you can go back to sleep until the sun comes up.”
Dart chose to sleep on the soft sand at the bottom of the ocean. Like all dolphins, Dillard would go into a semi-sleep near the surface where he could quickly take in oxygen when he needed it.
