Awen continued to the end of that tunnel and climbed a flight of concrete steps. She entered a passageway Haven residents had closed off from the basement of one of the college buildings called Conner Hall. At the end of the corridor, she spun an iron wheel. It activated a pulley system, and a large metal panel slid aside. She slipped through the opening and grunted as she manually pushed the heavy door back into place.
The Academy no longer existed. It closed in 1960 due to deplorable conditions imposed on vulnerable patients. The buildings now housed Virginia’s Shenandoah Community College. Many of the cellars and basements had been partitioned over the years by the enterprising Outcasts. None of the Uppers had any idea these subterranean rooms had shrunk or disappeared. Those spaces, along with a vast tunnel and cavern network comprised the world of Haven.
