Humanity has colonized on the tidally locked planet Pendomus.
Residing between extreme heat and frigid cold is the complex known as the Helix. Within lies a highly sophisticated society functioning solely on humans fulfilling their life’s purpose as determined by their natural aptitudes and daily brain scans.
Seventeen-year-old Runa Cophem has found her calling studying the ancient trees nearby and anxiously awaits a professional placement which will allow her to continue her work.
Runa’s life takes an unforeseen turn when she’s brutally attacked and left for dead in those woods. Rescued by a stranger with blue hair, she’s immersed into a surprising way humanity has survived without the Helix. Fueled by a yearning to understand and an attraction she didn’t even know was possible, Runa tries to make a new life for herself. Yet, there’s much she doesn’t know about herself, about the planet, and the forces controlling her from afar.
What she needs are some answers.
An author emerges from the depths of Minnesotan waters. Sci-fi/Fantasy is my pen of choice. When not writing, I engage in acts of whimsy. I kinda adore philosophical thinking. When not blogging about my books, I blog about the thoughts haunting my mind-- which typically find their way into the pages of my books. If you want the first insight into future novels, follow me on my author website: www.carissandrews.com
This first chapter was part of a much larger scene. In fact, the first chapter was originally my fifth chapter, but due to the desire of my editors to bring the action up front, this became my introduction to Runa's world. I always liked this scene. Being completely frozen in terror as an invisible creature's saliva pools across my face freaks me the hell out. Doesn't it freak you out, too?
The Morph’s sticky tongue returns, paying particular attention to my eye socket, drenching the area in saliva. The viscous liquid pools in my lashes, cementing my eyelids together. Whatever its intention, it plans to take its time. I swallow hard and will death to claim me.
