Introduction: Welcome to SPM’s Inaugural Issue by Danny O. Snow
In 2012, self-publishing and e-publishing finally came of age, after years of wishful thinking on the part of visionaries. Last year, 17 of Amazon’s top 100 books in the U.K. were self-published; Fifty Shades of Grey alone sold more than 65 million copies worldwide.
The momentum continues in 2013. But in the booming world of “Do-it-Yourself-Publishing” (DIYP) until now there’s been a relative void of unbiased, even-handed resources for the self-publisher. Seems like everyone has an agenda, or is trying to sell something to the hapless writer who wants to try DIYP, but can’t keep up with the furious pace of change in today’s publishing industry.
SPM strives to change all that. We’ve been incredibly fortunate to enlist some of the top names in the book world as contributing editors. (See “About the Columnists” at the end of this issue for details.) They are all experts with solid credentials in a diversity of disciplines that every self-publisher needs to grasp in today’s incredibly complex and competitive book world, as it evolves.
There’s one thing we all share in common at SPM: the conviction to give DIYP writers a potent arsenal of tips and tricks that they can deploy to self-publish a better book (printed or digital) and more effectively cultivate a grassroots – but potentially worldwide – readership.
This is our shared vision of the future: more and more writers reaching readers, with fewer and fewer middlemen in the way. A decade ago, they called us dreamers and wild-eyed revolutionaries… but in 2013, self-publishing is now a serious factor in the book world. We’re here for real, and we’re here to stay. Thanks for joining us at SPM. We aim to be your one-stop source for self-publishing success!
Kind regards,
Danny O. Snow
