When last we saw
Imara, she and her family were gathered in the cemetery in Edenton, across the lake from the family estate, Maisie House. It appeared that they were involved in an unusual moonlight ceremony, dancing to the beat of drums, around a fire.
Before that event, the family and most of the town, had gathered for what turned out to be a double funeral. Days after the death of her husband, Ora Ward dropped dead suddenly in her sleep and the family was able to hold a double ceremony for the long-lived, long-time married couple, united in death as they had been in life.
The death of Brownlee Ward is what brought Imara and her cousins, Chike and Cat, to the town of Edenton, North Carolina. Although she doesn’t say so, because she is so grateful that business is booming, Imara is secretly pleased by the unexpected trip out of town. The woman is on the verge of burnout from working nonstop for three years to build a successful catering business.
