James reached out, habit guiding his hand toward where he expected a doorknob, instead encountering a bare door. Glancing over to the other side, it was also blank.
"So, how does it open?"
"There's a plate on the wall over here," Rachael observed, reaching a tentative hand out. When her finger got within a few inches of the slightly raised section of wall at waist height, a light began to glow around the edge of the control panel. At least she thought of it as a control panel.
"Getting some response," James commented, watching her actions, and observing the blue glow from the touch pad and a yellow outline glowing around the now obvious door. "Obviously not abandoned, or at least it still has the power turned on. Tap the plate."
She followed his instructions and the door obediently slid into a recess in the wall, exposing a small room beyond. Looking inside, it was about the size of her walk-in closet at home, but without the clothes and shoes.
"Closet?"
"I don't think so… it has a door on the far side," he pointed out the dim yellow outline of another door, with a touch panel to one side of it. Stepping in, he pressed the panel, but it just blinked orange and the door stayed put.
"Hmmm… this one must be locked."
Stepping forward to see a bit better, Rachael cleared the door jamb she had been blocking, whereupon the first door slid quietly shut. The only sound was her squeal of surprise as she jumped away, bumping into James. As they stumbled together, he again hit the touch pad on the door on the far side of the tiny room. They were suddenly bathed with a brilliant blue light.
"Ouch!" Clenching his eyes shut, James felt an odd, cool flush all over his body.
