Cornelius stood in front of the court sifting through his papers then walked slowly to the center of the court. He stopped with a heavy boot on the hardwood floor, which rang loud in the now-silent courtroom. Standing there for a moment he looked over his paperwork. “Your honor, Thomas Davis is charged with piracy and was also arrested the night of the storm.”
“Same ship as Mr. Atwell?” The judge asked.
“No, we don’t believe so, sir.”
The Judge adjusted his spectacles. “Thomas Davis, do you understand the charges of which you have been accused?”
“I do, your honor,” Thomas said in a respectful tone.
“And how do you wish to plead?” the Judge continued.
“Not guilty your honor.”
The Judge looked at Cornelius and gave him a permissive nod. Cornelius spun around until he faced Thomas but did not look at him. “It’s been stated that you have not denied being aboard the pirate ship when it went down in the storm. How do you explain this?”
“Quite easily, I was aboard the ship,” Thomas said.
