Right at that moment, there was a huge splash coming from the water.
“What was that?” exclaimed Sammi Jo and her mom at the same time.
“It was probably just a fish,” said her dad staring out toward the dark water.
“No, it wasn’t. That was way too loud!” shouted Sammi Jo emphatically.
They stood very still, listening, but heard nothing else. After a few moments, they decided to go ahead and start making their s’mores. They were a little bit nervous and kept glancing toward the ocean wondering if they would see or hear something else.
“Let’s sing a song,” said her dad. “Does anyone remember our campfire songs from last summer?”
“I could teach you a new—” started Sammi Jo.
Splash!
“There it is again!” exclaimed Sammi Jo. “What is it, Daddy?”
“Run up to the house and get my big flashlight, Sammi Jo, and we will see if we can see anything out there.”
Sammi Jo went running to the house and appeared back, breathlessly, a few moments later with the flashlight. All three of them stood there shining the light at the water for a very long time, but never saw or heard anything else. They finally decided to make their s’mores and go to bed. Mr. Meriwether said he would investigate in the morning when it was light to see if he could figure anything out.
