Just then a zing and a loud crack went by his ear. “Ambush!” yells Mac, then to J.T. “Ambush Front!”
Suddenly both vehicles swerve right and everyone is firing at the left flank. They counter left and fire at the right flank, each overlapping as they zig, then zag. As they continue the zig-zag motion and unleash a barrage of fire, the incoming rounds stop.
J.T. gets on the team comms, “Anyone hurt―over?” No one responds.
Mac is impressed with Deb, who is still chewing on her cigar and showing no sign of fear. Mac loves Deb deeply, more deeply than any other woman in his life. If anything happens to her and it is his fault he could not live with himself. He tries hiding his feelings for her, but he cannot. She feels the same about him.
Mac snaps back to reality and asks Deb and Deano, “Are you guys all right?”
Deano says, “I am, but Deb isn’t.”
Deb shoots Deano a hard look and grits her teeth so hard she snaps the end of her cigar which flies out the window.
Mac orders, “Deb, stop!”
Deb says, “It’s just a scratch. I’ll worry about it later.”
Mac gets on the team comms, “Cool Razor, Warmonger here, Dancer has been hit we need to stop―over.”
Deb shouts loud enough to be heard over the comms, “I’m going to tell you two one more time. It’s a scratch and I’ll deal with it when we get to the Embassy. Now leave me the fuck alone―out!”
Mac glares at Deb. J.T. shrugs and taps T.K. on the head to motion for him to continue. While on the paved road, J.T. and Mac scan for IEDs as Crazy Larry and Deano guide their respective vehicles with their GPS devices. Small spots of blood dribble down the lower part of Deb’s shirt. While scanning left, Deano notices the spots. Deb catches the look and glares at Deano as if to say ‘Don’t say anything.’ Then without any warning her face goes pale and she begins losing consciousness.
