“One of the dangerous delusions that the Christian must avoid is that of the perfect human society situated somewhere in the future. It was one of the limitations of Judaism that it dreamt of such a future, a limitation that Christians outgrew, and which we now see returning.” --T.S. Eliot
Now eighty years after Eliot penned this warning, Christians are tempted into speculation about the future Kingdom and the return of the Christ to set up such a new Kingdom. The books of the Hebrew and Christian scriptures are searched for prophecies to bolster beliefs we have bought at basement prices.
The reality we have to live with today is very different from the world people dwelt in 2,000 years ago. Cause and effect is the expectation we live with and operate by. There are no mysterious entities that will harm us or supernatural forces that will save us from ourselves. Though we do constantly invent super heroes to save the day. There is no supernatural world waiting to take over this one though again, we invent aliens of other planets invading and colonizing us and our world. These are old stories in modern form. Today, people believe them, and there are survivalists and others who firmly believe in an alternative universe.
The world we see and swim in daily is the only world we can know. However, this world is full of the unknown and mystery. Faith operates in this real world. There is no magic, but the creative process of our becoming goes on full tilt. We have barely scraped the surface of what it means to be a self-conscious person, responsible for ourselves and able to know the divine.
