For a moment Abe said nothing. The disjointed word of Staines’ rambling speech rattled through his mind. Could it be? Dare he hope?
‘He said he was looking for a way to travel through time. Maybe it really is a sort of time travel machine. I don’t know. It’ll take me years just to figure out what all the computers do. ‘Let’s see.’ He swept his eyes over the vast array of machines before him. That they didn’t have years was something he could think about later. Could this really be the means to do what he had always dreamed about since childhood?
None of them saw the sudden manic gleam in Amon’s eyes. Before they could stop him, he had thrown the two switches, and without waiting for the voice, marched into the white panel.
With another crack, this time much louder, and a brilliant and painful flash of light, he disappeared.
