When Raven’s Blood first met Talman Goodearth, he’d never seen anything like him before.
They were only children, and Raven had never been anywhere but his village and the forests that surrounded it. He knew there were other places and other people but he had no concept of them. They were abstracts, things that existed only in stories. When Tal arrived in River’s Bend with his parents, Raven was fascinated by him. Tal’s hair was dark blond, his eyes as green as the forest in high summer, colors that weren’t naturally occurring in Raven’s people. And Tal’s skin was tanned, but only because he spent a lot of time in the sun. The skin normally covered by clothing was creamy and pale, unlike Raven’s own skin, which was tan all over.
Raven’s parents said the newcomers were from Bemeht, the country to the west of theirs.
