Most children have no idea why they are going to school, other than “To Learn Stuff”.
A best-kept secret is that many parents don’t give any thought about why their children are in school. Most parents are so relieved to have the child finally in school that they forget to really think about: WHY ARE THEY IN SCHOOL!
The short answer is:
“THE MORE YOU KNOW, THE LESS YOU TOW!”
The more productive answer is: “the better you do in school, the more cool stuff you can have!”
Or how about this answer (My favorite, but hard for a young child to get their head around): When I am old and can’t take care of myself, you will be able afford to take good care of me!”
Your child is not in school just to get good grades you can brag about. Your child is in school to learn how the world works. Your child needs to understand that if they don’t do their work, they don’t get a paycheck.
In school the paycheck is grades. In the real world the paycheck is money. It allows your child to pay rent, buy food and buy a car and go on vacation. It allows them to take their girl or boyfriend on a nice date.
Young children are not yet able to appreciate how important retirement funds are, that will hit them in middle age unless you let them participate in helping you build your retirement. That gives them a head start on reality.
Make your child aware of what you do to help your parents when they are retired and enter old age. They will view that as appropriate adult behavior, and do it for you without question when you need it!
If you don’t pay much attention to your retirement, then your child basically becomes your retirement. They will be taking care of you when you no longer can. Their capability to take care of you directly relates to how well they did in school. Do they know how the world works?
You are creating the quality of your future by how well you allow our child to learn how to make his world work.
