We took the back roads through the mountains of Gaia so as to avoid recognition or capture. Andromeda had confided into me that she had become quite unpopular with the Gaian peasants and feared for her life should we travel on the main roads. We did run into one skirmish—a crack dealer tried to kill Andromeda as we passed through the outskirts of Gaia’s other main city, Ardonia. But we all survived, thanks to Andromeda’s quick skills with the laser sword and her main general, General Jeanne’s, guns.
At last we reached Iles de Gaia. It was a charming little village with mainly thatched cottages and a large castle in the center. It reminded me of the books I’d recently read about Earth—a time period called medieval. I was charmed.
‘We are going to the castle, of course,’ Andromeda said. ‘Baroness von Gaia is awaiting us.’
‘A baroness?’ I said.
‘Yes. She knows very well how to manipulate weapons and she even knows some
biological warfare. Some people say she’s a witch though,’ Andromeda said.
