‘I have an idea that may assure victory in the west, Khan,’ Subutai said one morning as they walked among the horses.
‘The Fire Horse has already spoken.’ Genghis raised an eyebrow. ‘You believe you know more than the Sky Spirits’ messenger?’
‘Never, Khan!’
Genghis did not miss a step. ‘And this idea?’
‘We send for a mystic. We have gathered a few into our empire over the years. I think your protection and benevolence should now be repaid.’
‘Phah!’ Genghis threw up one hand, startling a nearby horse. ‘What would a mystic know that a shaman wouldn’t?’
Subutai stroked the nervous horse’s neck, calming him down. ‘I have heard they deal in magic. Powerful magic beyond a shaman’s wisdom.’
‘Impossible!’
‘Maybe so, Khan, but why take nations under your protection if we cannot harness their skills?’
Genghis pondered his words. ‘Very well. Bring me one of these mystics. I shall see if they’re worth my protection.’
