Looking out into the ocean, I felt the ocean breeze hug me as it blew around me. My feet were bare and I curled my toes to feel the warm sand under them. A tiny hand slipped into mine and I looked down to see a little girl at my side. Her blonde hair billowing in the breeze and when she looked up at me, her smile made my heart dance. I felt another hand grasp my empty one and turned my head to look. It was my Lillian, standing beside me. She too, looked at me with a wide smile and bright eyes. Turning back to the little girl, I bent down in front of her, cupping her beautiful face with my hands. Lillian came and bent down behind her, holding her.
“Mommy?” the little girl said. Mommy? She pointed to the water. “Come with me! Hold my hand and don’t let go!” She grabbed my hand and pulled me to the water, laughed as she ran.
Where had I seen her before? Her face was so familiar.
“Layla!” Lillian shouted and ran towards her. The little girl laughed even more when Lillian reached her and picked her up. I watched as the two girls twirled joyfully around in the water.
“Mommy!” the little girl shouted over Lillian’s shoulder. “Wait for me!”
