The cardinal chirped louder as Lillian continued to splash through the water. I heard her giggling and I smiled in response. Layla’s cooing voice on the monitor stirred me and I opened my eyes. I turned on the screen and looked at her. She was sitting up and clapping her hands. My heart burst with love and I got up to go get her. I walked up to the door of her nursery and paused, listening in on her. I heard her giggling and I took a deep breath to soak in the present moment. Hearing her and Lillian laugh brings so much happiness to my heart. I slowly opened the door and nearly gasped at what I saw. Layla was standing in her crib, leaning over the side and pointing to the corner of the room.
“What is it baby?” I asked her and picked her up. She immediately put her head down on my shoulder and I breathed in her smells from her hair.
I sat down in the rocking chair and we sat in silence, hugging each other so tight. I felt tears of gratitude build behind my eyes as I felt Layla’s arms around me. It has taken me so long to get here with her, something I wasn’t sure I could ever do. I took a few deep breaths to really draw in the moment. For it is still astonishing to me, just how powerful love really is and its ability to heal all things. She finally pulled back and put her hands on my face and the deep sense of love and appreciation I felt nearly melted me right in the chair. She pointed again. A chill, so strong ran down my spine. I wasn’t sure what prompted me but I knew to just say it.
“Hi Joseph,” I whispered and Layla’s face lit up with smiles.
