Then they took turns walking down to the creek with the bucket to collect water.
They kept their little patch damp and about a week later there were 200 tiny stalks pushing their way to the surface.
The boy and his sister kept at it. And a little over a month later there were several baskets there on the table filled with 200 ears of corn.
At this, Father was indeed pleased. “My!! You have enough here to feed our family for weeks and then some! You have done well my children.”
But the boy said “Please Father, if it’s all the same, I want more than this. I’ve brought this here to show you my labors have not all been for naught. But I have plans for these, and they do not include the pot.”
The boy’s answer surprised and vexed his father, and his countenance showed it quite plainly.
